IMMUNIZATIONS

 

Vaccinating children is one of the most important things we do as pediatricians, helping to make sure each generation is healthier than ever before. Polio, pertussis (whooping cough), haemophilus influenza meningitis, pnuemoccocal meningitis, measles, mumps, and chicken pox are just a few of the very serious or deadly diseases once common, that we now almost never see because of protection from vaccines.

We feel strongly about the importance of vaccines and want you to have as much information as needed for you to feel comfortable about vaccinating your child.

Our typical vaccine schedule is outlined below. A more detailed version tailored to our practice is also available. There are occasional adjustments due to shortages and availability. Adolescent immunization is as important as the infant and early childhood vaccine program in preventing disease.

Yes, we recommend HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) vaccine, also known as Gardisil to our preteen and teenage girls. It is a series of 3 vaccines, given over 6 months which shows great promise in reducing or eliminating the risk of cervical cancer as an adult.

Summer 2011—we now recommend Gardisil for boys as well.
